“Get Your Plaid On” April 10-16 for Hilton Head’s legendary golf tournament!
By Blanche T. Sullivan, Contributor
Hilton Head Island has a well-established reputation as a premier vacation destination, but did you know that it was a golf tournament that helped to secure the tropical hotspot’s place on the world map nearly 50 years ago?
The late Charles Fraser, considered by many to be the pioneer of Hilton Head, was a passionate visionary and entrepreneur who believed that hosting a prestigious golf tournament with golf icons would spotlight the island’s beauty and garner positive attention regarding its unrivaled offerings. Fraser’s plan was to have the initial Heritage golf tournament take place Nov. 27-30, 1969, during Thanksgiving weekend, on the island’s newly created Harbour Town Golf Links.
In spite of taking place in a remote, unknown destination on an unfamiliar golf course, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Pete Dye were among the first to sign on for the Heritage and Fraser’s vision was realized. Palmer won the championship cup, the event generated a great deal of positive buzz and the rest, as they say, is history.
Situated in The Sea Pines Resort, Harbour Town Golf Links has been the award-winning home to this highly anticipated PGA TOUR event ever since and the RBC Heritage presented by Boeingannually features many of the biggest names in golf and attracts thousands of spectators – many of whom consider it their favorite event and attend with their families year after year.
The weeklong tournament traditionally kicks off with a grand ceremony on Monday, complete with professional bagpipers and a firing of the ceremonial cannon, and includes a wide range a fun activities for the whole family.
Beyond the exciting golf action that takes place amid Harbour Town’s idyllic landscape, the RBC Heritage offers attendees a unique opportunity to get close to the players, by following along the ropes and obtaining photos and autographs in a special fan zone.
Diehard golf fans enjoy participating in the RBC Heritage Pro-Ams. Not a golf enthusiast? Never fear. The RBC Heritage is arguably the island’s top opportunity to socialize, enjoy live music and show off your flair for fashion.*
Supporting the tournament is also a great way to give back. The Heritage Classic Foundation, general sponsor of the RBC Heritage, has raised nearly $32 million for charitable organizations throughout South Carolina.
Just steps from Harbour Town Golf Links, Harbour Town offers excellent boutique shopping, dining, water activities and more.
A variety of ticket packages are still available for the RBC Heritage presented by Boeing but, as the popular “Far from Par” event typically sells out, it is a good idea to sign on to be a part of Hilton Head’s “Plaid Nation” as early as you can.
